Plans For 173-Acre Battery Storage Site Sparks Fears of Spoiling ‘England’s Finest View’

Plans for a 173-acre battery energy storage site have been proposed near Thirsk, sparking concerns that it could ruin one of England’s most breathtaking views. The viewpoint at Sutton Bank, famously described as the “finest in England” by All Creatures Great and Small author Alf Wight (aka James Herriot), could be impacted by the development.

If anyone knows about Yorkshire’s stunning landscapes, it’s Alf Wight, whose novels inspired Channel 5’s All Creatures series. He praised the panoramic views from Sutton Bank, and we’d have to agree. However, according to the BBC, a battery energy storage site could be built at South Kilvington, just a few miles away.

Developer NatPower says the scheme will play a crucial role in delivering clean, secure, and affordable energy. However, over 360 public consultation responses have been received with some in favour. Both South Kilvington Parish Council and Thirsk Town Council urging North Yorkshire Council to reject the proposal.

A North York Moors National Park spokesperson objected, stating that the site would be visible from key viewpoints, including the famous Sutton Bank viewing platform.

The visitor centre at Sutton Bank saw around 146,347 visitors in 2024, a testament to the area’s popularity. The planning application remains undecided by North Yorkshire Council.
