San Carlo has been a firm favourite for years for good reason. It’s both style and substance, thanks to its great Italian food in beautiful settings. And it’s all just got a whole lot better, too, thanks to a whopping £2 million revamp at the Roundhay, Leeds venue.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary in the suburb with a brand new look, guests can expect the epitome of luxury when they walk into the revamped venue – with tons of inspiration taken from the stunning villas of Lake Como. For us, it felt ‘old money’ and incredibly luxurious, setting a precedent for what to expect for the rest of our meal.

Now, I know you’re here for the food, but we need to talk about the gorgeous terrace first. Upon walking onto the terrace, guests are immediately drawn to two twinkling olive trees that transport you to an Italian garden (albeit, in the middle of Roundhay).
Designed to enjoy all year round, the terrace is an elegant spot to dine and enjoy cocktails, with a retractable roof where guests can soak up the sun during the warmer months in style. Our guess is that this is gonna be an absolute hotspot over the summer.

On to the main event, however: the food. Adored for its extensive Italian offering, San Carlo has remained true to the heart of the brand following its huge revamp, bringing back the kind of dishes customers have loved for half a century already.
Expect a little something for everyone all day long – from classic Italian seafood dishes to comforting pasta and stunning pizzas.
We started with their handmade knots of mozzarella (served with crostini) and their beloved burrata, served on top of beef tomato carpaccio and fresh basil – both refreshing and light dishes to kick off our meals, and both boasting the perfect flavours to get us into the Italian mood.
And while it was difficult to choose our mains through the sea that is their perfectly curated menu, we finally settled on the Sardinian style gnocchetti pasta with aubergine and pork sausage ragu and their incredibly luxurious fillet steak, finished off with a velvety Gorgonzola cheese sauce. Both dishes were warming, filling and overall molto bene – but the steak, in particular, was an absolute must-order. Tender, buttery and wonderfully indulgent.

Authentic Italian flavours and traditions seep into the dessert menu, too, with proper palate-cleansing panna cotta on the menu (a fave of ours), alongside show-stopping ice cream served tableside, plenty of pistachio, and finally, the traditional tiramisu.
Whether it’s a special date night or just a weekday lunch with a luxurious flair, San Carlo’s Flying Pizza is a must-visit for Italian food lovers.
San Carlo’s Flying Pizza is back open daily from 12 noon at 60 Street Ln, Roundhay, Leeds LS8 2DQ.
