The National Fish & Chips Awards were held in London last night and hosted by comedian Jason Manford – and Yorkshire chippies cleaned up with four chippies named in the top 10 and East Yorkshire’s Whiteheads Fish and Chips Ltd taking the top spot.
Yorkshire Live reported that a spokesperson from the Hornsea chippy said: “The Whiteheads Fish & Chips team are honoured, proud and so so delighted to say we are officially your 2023 UK Fish and Chip shop of the year. Simply, thank you.”
They weren’t the only ones celebrating last night as Leeds chippies The Bearded Sailor and Fish Bank in Sherburn in Elmet were also featured in the top 10 list along with Doncaster’s Auckley Friery.
Fish Bank owners took to Instagram to celebrate and congratulate fellow Yorkshire chippy who took home the gold writing: “Congratulations to Whiteheads Fish & Chips on being crowned the No.1 Chip Shop in the UK 2023. Big thanks to all of our customers for really supporting us on this journey.
They also took the time to thank the team saying: “A massive thanks to Karen and all of team Fish Bank. Let’s celebrate bringing the Top 10 award trophy back to Sherburn.”
The awards are organised by The National Federation of Fish Friests and last night’s event saw 600 guests attend from across the sector to celebrate the nation’s favourite dish!
The Bearded Sailor posted about the event beforehand writing: “We already feel like massive winners, whatever happens today when @jasonmanford announces the winner..
“Our Pudsey shop is only going to improve after going through this experience.”
Auckley Friery added: “Congratulations to all nominees and competition winners and especially the NFFF and sponsors.
“It’s been a fantastic event and a wonderful experience.”
