After a cheeky hit wave last week, we’ve started getting more and more excited for a summer of fun in God’s Own Country. From stunning beaches to fantastic walks and more, there is so much to enjoy in Yorkshire when the sun shines. With two national parks and a stunning coastline, you sure won’t be bored, and we aren’t the only ones who think so as one of Yorkshire’s seaside towns has been featured in National Geographic’s beach towns to visit in the UK.

Cheap flights and promises of sunnier climates have been popular for years, but with the price of everything on the up, could our seaside towns be on the up? We think so. Fish & chips, a bucket and spade on the beach and spending time in the arcades are a trip down memory lane for us here at The Yorkshireman. And, although those things are still great, we’ve seen a slow transformation of seaside towns for the better with fantastic new restaurants opening all the time offering up a new more diverse culinary offering that heightens your experience as well as more experiential hotels.
National Geographic picked seven fantastic seaside towns to visit this summer and included in its list was the oldest seaside town in England, Scarborough. The magazine highlighted that as well as offering up fantastic beaches such as South Bay Beach or Blue Flag North Bay Beach, the Victorian seaside town was also attracting folk with a range of new fantastic festivals and events.

Its Italian Gardens and Esplanade, The Grand, and its Asian-inspired Peasolme Park are all classic reasons to visit the town, but its Open Air Theatre, which attracts a range of the biggest acts from around the UK and the World is the perfect excuse to make a weekend of it this summer. If that wasn’t enough, its front is getting a massive upgrade with West Pier’s £20 million transformation breathing new life into the front.
The article mentions Bike & Boot Hotel as a place to stay and we couldn’t agree more. It’s the town’s best example of a big hotel that is the most dog-friendly you’ll come across, whilst also housing a modern small plates restaurant that serves fantastic cocktails and offers great views out to sea.
If you’re looking for summer fun this summer, we couldn’t agree more about Scarborough as a place of interest. Others included in the National Geographic list include Margate, Barmouth, Penzance, Weymouth, Whitley Bay, and North Berwick.
