This Yorkshire Town Has Been Named In 11 Best Place To Live In UK

Whilst we’d argue that the whole of Yorkshire is the best place to live, lists like these are always a nice reminder of the stunning towns and villages scattered across God’s Own Country. A new ranking from travel website World Atlas highlights 11 towns that are great to visit on any day of the year – not just when the sun decides to make an appearance on a bank holiday weekend.

Among them is the ever-popular West Yorkshire town of Hebden Bridge. Nestled in the Calder Valley alongside the Rochdale Canal, the town is renowned for its vibrant independent scene, with bookshops, pubs, cafés, and quirky local businesses lining its streets. World Atlas also highlights the town’s cultural credentials, including the famous Trades Club, a music venue housed in a former working men’s club that has welcomed legendary performers such as Patti Smith alongside a host of touring folk, indie, and alternative acts.

The website notes that Hebden Bridge remains more affordable than many of its southern counterparts, with the average house price sitting at under £262,000. It also benefits from having some incredible countryside right on its doorstep, including Hardcastle Crags, a 400-acre National Trust site featuring riverside walks, woodland trails, and beautiful oak and birch forests.

What are some of the best independents in Hebden Bridge?

We love a trip to Hebden Bridge and have discovered a few favourite spots over the years. One place we always find ourselves returning to is Vocation & Co., the brewery’s town-centre taproom. It serves an excellent range of locally brewed craft beers alongside some of the best burgers you’ll find in the area.

Another must-visit is Salta’s Sandwich Shop & Deli. Inspired by family heritage and New York-style delis, it serves generously filled sandwiches that are guaranteed to leave you full, satisfied, and already planning your next visit. Just across the road is COIN, a relaxed small-plates restaurant run by the same team, offering a menu packed with creative dishes and seasonal ingredients.

And if all that food has somehow left room for one more stop, we’d recommend the White Lion. We stayed there during a recent visit and found it to be the perfect base for exploring the town. Alongside comfortable, cosy rooms, the pub serves excellent beer, hearty pies, and quality sandwiches.

In fact, if you’re planning a food-focused trip to Hebden Bridge, you might want to wear something with a little extra breathing room. Trust us.
