I would say it’s no secret that the Yorkshire coast is one of my favourite parts of God’s Own Country, perhaps only beaten to the top spot by the Yorkshire Dales. It offers such a huge variety of places to explore, from faded seaside towns that still hide little gems, to stunning fishing villages that make you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time.
That’s why it was difficult to read about the so-called ‘Brown Flag’ awards, a tongue-in-cheek annual ranking highlighting some of the worst places in the UK for seawater quality for swimmers.
However, the report, which uses Environment Agency data, also highlighted the places in Yorkshire with the best water quality, and we thought those deserved celebrating too. The rankings were compiled by HolidayParkGuru.co.uk, which analysed data from hundreds of beaches across the country.
The report uses a rating system ranging from three stars for “excellent” water quality down to zero stars for “poor”, with several Yorkshire beaches earning top marks.
Among them is Cayton Bay, located between Scarborough and Filey. We love a trip to Cayton Bay thanks to its good parking, brilliant surfing conditions and handy spot for grabbing a bite to eat or a drink. Just be prepared for the steep hill down to the beach.
Also featured is Danes Dyke, one of our favourite spots for a dog walk. Better still, it’s one of the all-year-round dog-friendly beaches in Yorkshire.
So which are Yorkshire’s cleanest beaches for swimming?
Cayton Bay
Danes Dyke, Flamborough
Flamborough South Landing
Hornsea
Marske Sands
Redcar Granville
Redcar Lifeboat Station
Redcar Stray
Sandsend
Whitby
