A New Surf School & Cafe Approved For Hidden Gem Tourist Spot On The Yorkshire Coast

Cayton Bay is about to get a fantastic new surf school and cafe, as the existing, well-established surf school is set to be replaced by a modernised 21-metre-long facility. The location offers stunning views toward the sea and is surrounded by farmland, and is already a popular tourist destination.

The first floor will offer a cafe and kitchen, equipment hire and storage space, whilst the ground floor will accommodate a wetsuit and board storage area as well as equipment hire, W.C. facilities, an office, utility space and a cash desk following approval from North Yorkshire Council.

From a personal perspective, having visited The Secret Spot and been taught to surf by the team there, I can confidently say this will be a fantastic addition to the area. The people behind it are incredibly passionate about surfing and deeply invested in the local community and coastline. The new facility looks set to build on that enthusiasm and will be a real asset to the area, enhancing what is already one of the Yorkshire coast’s most popular destinations.

The new building will have a dual-pitched roof and will be 5.5m high to the ridge, 10.5 metres wide and 21.2 metres long. An earth shelter will be created from the soil and materials on site to create a building that does not require additional topsoil. The build will incorporate a mix of external materials, including steel profile roof and wall panels, and dark grey render and areas of timber cladding, This Is The Coast reports.

The tourism service for the area and the Cayton Parish Council have been ‘very supportive’ of the proposal that planning officers have said is ‘well-designed and environmentally responsible development.’ Planning commented that ‘the replacement facility is of comparable scale and there is no evidence to indicate that the development would give rise to an unacceptable impact on highway safety.”

Council planners said that vehicle traffic to and from the well-established surfing and tourism destination is expected to remain relatively low in volume.

It is set to be an exciting development for the area, and the council agree as they concluded: “From a design and landscape perspective, the scheme delivers a substantial uplift in architectural quality, replacing informal and visually poor structures with a purpose-built, modest and contextually responsive building.”
