It’s the summer holidays and we are all looking for things to do. Well, if you’ve been living under a rock all your life, you might not know that Yorkshire has some fabulous beaches for you to enjoy a typical British seaside holiday. And, we aren’t the only ones who think so, as The Times has named four of Yorkshire’s beaches in its best beaches in the UK for 2024.
Cayton Bay is first on the list and is a popular spot with locals. It’s an amazing surf spot and has a great shop and lesson from Scarborough Surf school and Salty Dog cafe to enjoy a drink and £6 smash burgers. The Times also noted that there is a “pop-up sauna on the old bunker at the north end” that appears now and again. But, you;ll have to check the schedule here to visit on a day they’re there. It rates the water quality there as excellent as well.
One we recently visited ourselves is Boggle Hole, which is just a short drive down from Robin Hood’s Bay, It has a great little beach, but be warned about the steep walk down to it. The Times comments that “the tiny car park brings you to the wooded mouth of the Mill Beck, running wide and shallow across a beach paved with Yorkshire mudstone” and says you should “visit for the falling tide, and try the cake in the YHA tearoom”.

Next was Whitby, probably the most popular seaside town in Yorkshire. And, although we’ve visited Whitby on numerous occasions, we’ve never actually visited its beach. Too busy, visiting its many pubs. But, The Times says it’s a seaside town that “has it all”. And calls its beach “world-class”. It also notes you can get surfing lessons for just £35 as well.
Redcar, home to the lemon top ice cream, is the last on its list for Yorkshire spots. It comments that it’s a “town with history, soul and public art”. And saus that it’s home to an impressive stretch of immaculate sands running eight miles from Teesmouth, past the ruins of the steelworks and on via Marske to Saltburn. And, also notes the excellent water quality.
