The British summer is a bittersweet experience. On the one hand, we are excited to come out of hibernation and partake in outdoor activities. Whether that be hiking, gardening or visiting a beer garden with friends. But, on the other hand, we complain about the lack of sunshine and book holidays to much hotter and more reliably sunny countries. And, it seems we are right to seek hot sunnier climes as the UK is one of the least sunniest countries in the world.
Research found that the UK received the 5th ‘least annual sunshine hours’ in the world. On average England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland only get 1,530 sunshine hours per year. This works out at around 4.19 hours a day. On the plus side, we do like complaining about the weather.
We can enjoy the most amount of sunshine in May with 193.5 hours of sunshine with July close behind at 192 hours.. So, make sure you get planning on what festivals and events you’re going to. The months we’ve just come out of have the least with January having 58 and February 78.5. The days seem longer and merrier at the moment albeit still a little fresh but March has 113 and Apri. 157.

If you compare that to other countries Egypt is the sunniest with 3756.4 hours of sunshine a year. The sunniest places are found in Africa with the least sunniest mainly found in Europe. The least sunniest country in the world is the Faroe Islands with Iceland in second and Saint Pierre and Miquelon in third. Ireland came above UK in fourth place with the UK named 5th least sunniest.
