This Stunning Yorkshire Dales Garden Is the Perfect Place for an Autumn Day Out

With crisp, cool weather, trees turning vibrant colours, and leaves crunching underfoot, October is the perfect time to explore the outdoors. If you are looking for an enchanting autumn day out, then you can’t go wrong with the peaceful and picturesque Parcevall Hall Garden located in Skyreholme, Wharfedale, in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

The gardens were created by Sir William Milner, who was the 8th Baronet of Nun Appleton, near York. Milner was a fine horticulturist, architect, and plantsman, and in 1927 began rebuilding the derelict 16th-century Parcevall Hall. Once completed, it became his home for 30 years. During this time, he developed what became the extraordinary gardens you see today.

They are spread across 24 acres of woodland walks, formal terraces, and breathtaking views of the Dales in every direction. Walking around the gardens, you’ll find a limestone rock garden and a charming rose garden, where you can sit, relax, and take in the autumnal wonders all around you. The place is brimming with an impressive array of plants, including rare and exquisite species from the UK and places around the world, such as the Himalayas and China. The gardens are a spectacular blend of the cultivated and wild.

The magnificence of the gardens has caught the attention of TV producers looking for the perfect filming location. They have featured on TV Shows including:

  • Songs of Praise
  • The Hairy Bikers
  • BBC Gardeners’ World
  • Yorkshire Great and Small with Dan Walker and Helen Skelton
  • Escape to the Country
  • ITV Weather

The paths are very easy to follow, but it is worth bearing in mind that the gardens are on a steep hillside that has some uneven ground. Therefore, we would recommend some sturdy walking shoes.

Oh, and once you’ve finished your walk, you can call into their delightful tea room. Run by Love Brownies, they serve delicious sandwiches, home-baked cakes, quiches, soups, scones, hot and cold drinks, and of course their legendary brownies. You can sit inside or, if it is not too chilly, outside with those views of the gardens and the Dales.

So, visit the Yorkshire Dales this autumn for a tranquil day out filled with natural splendour. Parcevall Hall Gardens are open daily from April to October from 10am till 6pm (last admission at 4.30pm). The entrance fee for adults is £12 and for senior citizens £11. If you are bringing the little ones along, then good news: they are free to enter if under 12. You will find the gardens located at Skyreholme, Skipton BD23 6DE.
