Rare Blood Moon To Rise Over UK Skies This September

One for the September calendar for avid sky gazers. The UK is set for a rare treat in the skies next month as a Blood Moon lunar eclipse rises over the skies on Sunday, September 7th, 2025. If you’re a photographer looking to get a great shot, it’s said that the early stages (when the Moon is low and red against the twilight sky) are the most striking. So, if you’re looking to the skies in Yorkshire this September, don’t miss this unique opportunity.

At 7:33 PM BST, the Moon will appear above the eastern horizon already glowing a deep red, as the total eclipse will have begun before moonrise in Britain. The phenomenon ends around 9:55 PM BST as the Moon gradually moves out of Earth’s shadow.

What is a Blood Moon?

A Blood Moon occurs when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a coppery-red tint caused by Earth’s atmosphere filtering sunlight. Instead of disappearing at the peak of the eclipse, the moon turns a coppery-red orange tint.

The event is safe to view with the naked eye. For the best view, find an open spot facing east—and don’t miss the chance to capture photos of the crimson Moon rising against the pink glow of the Belt of Venus at sunset.
