Yorkshire is home to some of the prettiest villages with that ageless charm that makes them popular tourist spots to this day. And, one of its villages has been named in The Times newspaper’s 25 of the prettiest village mini breaks in the UK. Highlighting the appeal of Britain’s villages, the paper writes: “Nearly a millennium since the Domesday Book, Britain’s villages have maintained their ageless appeal and also moved with the times.” And we couldn’t agree more. The charm of a village pub, green and surrounding countryside has never been more popular with people looking to escape the likes of cities for greener pastures in the summer months.

Taking the top spot in The Times’ prettiest village mini breaks in the UK was Beaulieu, Hampshire, but in second place was the North Yorkshire village of Askwit,h tucked in between Ilkley and Otley moors on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Described as a ‘clutch of stone buildings’, it’s praised for its surrounding walks.

And the perfect mini break stay is the Penny Bun restaurant with rooms, which opened in 2024, the paper highlightedhts. Having stayed there, we can attest that this is an absolute stunning spot with, not only amazing food but a fantastic beer garden with stunning views over the local countryside. Named after a local mushroom, the Penny Bun is a slick Nordic take on a country pub that just works. And, using food that is hyper-local, it’s one spot you’ll not forget in a hurry.

It’s a popular spot with cyclists and you can enjoy a short drive to the market town of Ilkley for some shopping, a spot of lunch and a wander around along the river.

The Times says that B&B has doubles from £200, and you can find out more via the link here.
