Two Yorkshire Cities Named In Top 10 Greenest Cities In UK

Yorkshire is made up of lush countryside, and more than ever, it’s important that we try and protect it. Even more so in its cities. So, it’s great to see that two of Yorkshire’s cities have featured in a list of the greenest cities in the UK, and surprisingly, it’s not Sheffield. The East Riding of Yorkshire city of Hull featured along with West Yorkshire’s Leeds.

The Co-operative Bank carried out research ranking the UK cities based on a few key factors, including air quality, green spaces, recycling rates, green jobs, conservation funding, and cycling infrastructure. And Hull and Leeds made the top 10.

Highlights for Hull were its commitment to recycling, with a rate of 46.52%, which it scored second, only beaten by Bristol. Hull also scored 5.48 overall, making it the 7th greenest city in the UK, according to Co-operative Bank’s research.

Leeds came in 10th place, scoring well in green space with 41.9% beaten by only three other cities in the top 10 including Reading, Nottingham and Stoke-on-Trent. It scored an overall score of 5.24.

On the other end, the three least green cities in the UK were London, Birmingham and Slough. And London was bottom due to its poor air quality, amount of green space and low recycling rate of 22.42%.
