‘Water Taxis’ Could Be Introduced In York To Help Improve The City’s Transport

It’s no secret that York is arguably Yorkshire’s busiest city. Bringing in 8.9 million tourists annually, it’s one of the UK’s star attractions, thanks to its quaint cobbled streets, Medieval flair and preserved history. But as locals will agree, it’s a busy place, with no off-season for relief – and especially busy around Christmas time.

As the City of York Council continues to work towards becoming a car-free city, it’s been revealed that councillors believe water taxis could help to improve York’s transport options. UK cities such as Birmingham, London and Bristol already operate water services for locals, with the Uber Boat on the Thames, in particular, taking off in recent years.

It’s been considered that water taxis would help to reduce congestion and increase sustainable travel in the city, while aiding the city’s Local Transport Strategy – which has been designed to cut car and van use by 20% by 2030.

City of York Council has also proposed ‘car-free days’, where residents would be discouraged from driving. Authorities are also working with local bus operators to increase and improve services across the city and suburbs.

Kate Ravilious, the senior Labour councillor responsible for transport said: “York is on the cusp of an exciting transition,

“I’m looking forward to seeing the city rise to the challenges we face and evolve to meet the needs of people today, tomorrow and over centuries to come.”
