30 Punters Trapped In Britain’s Highest Pub Due To Four-Foot Snowdrift

The UK got its first taste of snow over the weekend, and whilst for some it was a light dusting, others felt its effects. The highest pub in the UK, especially, has had more than 30 guests snowed in at Tan Hill Inn from January 5th.

After hearing about the folks who got snowed in at Yorkshire’s most famous pub back in 2021, it’s been our dream to get snowed in. The Yorkshire Post reported that there had been a four-foot snowdrift that left guests stranded.

Back in November 2021, Storm Arwen buried the Yorkshire Dales pub in five feet of snow, which left around 50 customers cut off with roads blocked due to the snow. And it has now happened again. Following an amber weather warning from the Met Office, snow-covered parts of Yorkshire, including the iconic pub.

Speaking to The York Press, co-manager Nicole Hayes said: “Some guests with 4x4s made the journey out this morning but the remainder wisely decided not to stay”

But it’s not all doom and gloom. For one, the customers are stuck in one of the cosiest pubs in the country – and one of, if not the, favourite pubs in the whole of Yorkshire.

The pub has seen its fair share of bad weather over the years with each landlord having their own story to tell. The writer of a great read The Inn at The Top, Neil Hanson for one documented being trapped for weeks with his partner when they ran the pub back in the 70s and the hardships that entailed including tripping up and falling down a staircase in one instant and locking themselves out the pub in another.

One thing that can give the customers up on Tan Hill Inn currently on day two is that it is unique as it runs on a generator, so power to the pub is not an issue, and obviously, these guys are ready for any event, being so isolated, so it’s well stocked.

Posting to social media they wrote: “Hello from a wintry Tan Hill Inn where our 23 snowed-in visitors and six staff are tucking into a full English and wondering how long their enforced stay will last here at Britain’s highest pub.

“Our guests are having a leisurely start to their day after a ‘convivial atmosphere’ last night because there’s no rush to check out until conditions improve up here on the moors.”

Staff and customers have been able to enjoy the unique situation, getting out and having a play in the snow as well as playing games and getting warm by the fire. Sounds like heaven, if you ask us.

Pictures show the customers enjoying their moment of solitude, with Australians Paul and Naomi getting cosy by the warm fire on day two of being stranded at Britain’s highest pub. And staff seem to be in high spirits, warm in their snuggies.

Owner of Tan Hill Inn Andrew Hields, who has run the pub since around 2018, says: “Morale is high, and both staff and customers are thoroughly enjoying themselves and taking it in their stride.”

Tan Hill Inn has fantastic accommodation on offer and is the perfect place to visit all year round, and who knows you might manage to be lucky enough to get snowed in. On our visit, we had torrential rain, but thanks to the busker night and the nice warm fire it was one of the nicest experiences we’ve had whilst travelling across God’s Own Country.
