Autumn is here, the leaves are starting to turn brown, yellow and golden hues, and a slight chill is in the air on a morning. And, we are here for it. Autumn walks are some of our favourites – especially in Yorkshire. And, one of Yorkshire’s most famous outdoor attractions has been named among the UK’s top ten spots for an autumnal walk.
Outdoor experts at GO Outdoors have analysed TripAdvisor reviews and average rainfall data to reveal the best places across the country for an autumn stroll. Padley Gorge, in Derbyshire’s Peak District, ranked third with a score of 8.35. The wooded valley is famed for its tumbling streams, moss-covered rocks and ancient oak woodland — a magical spot that looks particularly stunning as the autumn leaves turn golden.

In sixth place was Sheffield Park & Garden in East Sussex, another National Trust site celebrated for its Capability Brown-designed landscapes, lakes, and fiery displays of Japanese maples and ornamental trees each autumn.
Coming in at number eight is Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, located near the tiny city of Ripon. Founded in 1132, Fountains Abbey operated for more than four centuries until its dissolution under Henry VIII in 1539. Today, the site is run by the National Trust and remains one of the largest and best-preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England, complete with an elegant water garden.

With its combination of fascinating history, stunning architecture, and breathtaking natural beauty, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal offer one of the most magical places in the UK to experience the rich colours of autumn.
The North Yorkshire gem scored an impressive 7.24 out of 10, placing it above London’s Regent’s Park in the rankings. Taking the top spot in the national list was the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, which achieved a score of 9.3 out of 10. Winkworth Arboretum in Surrey followed in second with 8.51, while Padley Gorge in Derbyshire rounded out the top three with 8.35.
Natalie Wolfenden, author and hiking enthusiast at GO Outdoors, said: “The UK’s natural beauty comes to life in the autumn months, with the leaves shifting colour and the changing wildlife. I simply love it! To fully enjoy your autumn stroll, preparation is key. Layers are essential in the autumn months as they can be added or removed depending on the weather conditions on the day.”
