When you live in a ‘mixed’ Yorkshire household like ours (one partner from South Yorkshire and one from East Riding), you’ll find that there are many an argument on whose pronunciations are ‘right’ and ‘wrong’.
Is it a ‘croggy’ or a ‘coggy’? Is it ‘sock on’ or ‘hard on’? ‘Reet’ or ‘reyt’? We just can’t agree.
But luckily for me, a study has been conducted to finally put those tiffs to rest – as the Sheffield accent has been officially named the ‘best’ accent in Britain. Take yer ‘nout’s and ‘out’s, East Riding, and shove ’em where the sun don’t shine – because the language experts at WordTips have confirmed that ‘nowt’s and ‘owt’s are where it’s at.

Conducting research that gathered information from Tweets made globally about British accents, WordTips found that 39.8% of the Tweets gathered praised the Sheffield accent (thank you, Sean Bean), closely followed by the West Country Wiltshire accent which you can probably thank Hagrid for.
Not only did the Sheffield/South Yorkshire accent come out on top out of the entire country’s many different dialects, but it was also the only Yorkshire accent to make the top 10, with both Leeds and Bradford making an appearance much lower down in the rankings.

In the study, Leeds ranked twelfth best, while Bradford was placed at number fifteen.
Back to the ongoing quarrel at home, my partner will be pretty devastated to learn that Hull didn’t rank in the study at all, which, you can probably guess I’m feeling pretty smug about.
In addition to Hull, no North Yorkshire locations ranked in the study, either. But we’re here to tell you, no matter which part of Yorkshire you’re from, your accent is bloody elite.
