Bah, we bloomin’ love the Yorkshire accent and the slang words we use. Much like other regions, we have found our regional tones, which, if you live in Yorkshire, you’ll know differ from region to region. And in some cases, town to town. People in East Yorkshire have a different accent to those in South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire, and so on.
When it comes to being the top accent, that’s something we all agree on. And, although research done by The Hearing Care Partnership has revealed that Yorkshire has had an 18% boost, it didn’t quite make the top spot coming in fourth place behind Manchester, Essex and the Welsh accent. It has moved from one of the least desirable to one of the most, which is a boon.

The analysis was revisited from last year to see how things change, and they’ve had a massive swing compared to last year with the Manchester accent especially seeing a 127% search increase, which the company puts down to the Oasis reunion.
Ashish Shah, audiologist at The Hearing Care Partnership, says that: “It’s interesting to see how the Manchester accent has become popular all of a sudden. Last year, Manchester wasn’t even in the top five, so jumping to number one with a 127% increase is really impressive.”
He continued: “Accent play a significant role in the way we articulate ourselves, communicate, and connect to those around us. And the tonality, pitch, and pace of speech can change how we feel, so no wonder we are drawn to different accents!
“However, when we don’t hear well, accents can become an additional barrier when trying to communicate. As the recognisable vowel sounds are not so easy to pick up, it requires more listening effort, which means people have to work harder just to hear the words.
