Yorkshire-Born Artist, David Hockney, Has Died Aged 88

Influential artist, David Hockney, has passed away, his publicist has confirmed. The Bradford-born artist rose to prominence in the art world back in the 1960s with his colourful pop-art style paintings, and continued his work right up until his death.

Some of his most notable works include Pool with two Figures, The Splash, and his series of paintings created during his time in East Yorkshire – with iconic sights including Garrowby Hill and Sledmere village. The artist spent a number of years living in Bridlington, inspiring his series of Woldgate Woods, the fields of East Yorkshire and many other works.

Many of his works can be seen in Salts Mill, Saltaire, today, including some of his most recent iPad paintings. It is the largest collection of Hockney’s works in the world.

David Hockney is survived by his partner Jean-Pierre Gonçalves de Lima. The artist was living in Marylebone, London, after spending a number of years living and working in Normandy, France. The artist moved back to the UK last year after claiming people would turn up at his home in France without permission.

A statement released by his team reads: “The celebrated British artist David Hockney, one of the most important figures in contemporary art in both the 20th and 21st centuries, passed away peacefully at home on 11 June 2026, one month short of his 89th birthday.”

David Hockney leaves behind an art legacy that will be enjoyed by millions for generations to come, and will forever be remembered as a key figure in the pop art movement.
