The popular BBC series Gentleman Jack has been cancelled and is unlikely to be renewed for a third series it has been revealed.
Last week HBO, who co-produces the show with the BBC, revealed they would not renew the series which features Suranne Jones as the famous Anne Lister.
The network told Deadline : “HBO will not be moving forward with a third season of Gentleman Jack When we began this journey more than five years ago, we knew the series’ creator Sally Wainwright had a uniquely compelling vision.
It was revealed that the writer of the show Sally Wainwright was in talks with the BBC about continuing but, Wainright revealed the future of the show whilst in conversation with fans of the series broadcast on Saturday.

She said: “My plan was to go on, and I’d have loved to have told the story of the rest of her life and her final journey. That was my ambition when we set out.”
“I think, realistically, it’s unlikely. Shows have been cancelled and come back but it’s unlikely to happen to Gentleman Jack.”

Posting on Instagram, Suranne Jones wrote she was sad about the news but was pleased that: “this show has brought so many together, enabled people to share their stories, brought joy, emotion and creativity, and gave me a real connection to you as its audience.
She continued: “I’ve never been involved with a show that has made such a huge impact and touched my heart like this one has.”

Sophie Rundle, known for her role as Lister’s ‘wife in the series shared her thoughts on the cancellation as well writing: “What a privilege it has been to play Ann Walker and bring her and Anne Lister’s extraordinary love story back to life. I am so proud to have been a part in reclaiming their place in history.”
There has been an online petition asking the BBC to “Save Gentleman Jack, which has received almost 5,000 signatures but it isn’t looking great for the much-loved BBC drama.
