36 Of The Most Festive Christmas Markets And Events To Enjoy This Winter

Christmas 2020 was full of cancellations and lockdowns, so we intend to make the most of 2021. Don’t miss out on anything Christmassy in Yorkshire with our events guide to all the fun things happening in God’s Own Counry this Xmas. From local Christmas markets, to spectacular light installations and, of course, Santa’s Grotto visits – there’s plenty to see and do this festive season. Check out our guide to the Yorkshire Christmas markets and events that are pushing ahead this year.

1. Sheffield Christmas Market

Christmas cancellations swept the county, but Sheffield is the first to confirm the return of its Christmas Market for 2021. on November 12th over 50 log cabins over 50 log cabins inhabiting local traders selling gifts, food, alcohol, baked treats, home decor and so much more.

2. York Christmas Market

The historic city’s wonderful winter experience will return to York this Christmas. The streets will be twinkling with beautiful lights and festivities. St Nicholas Fair is hugely popular and its charming chalets with great gifts and delicious treats will return from 18th November to 23rd December.

3. Whitby Christmas Festival

Whitby festival is taking place this year on a smaller scale. You can expect great food and drink stalls weguess. They’ve not revealed much information with regards to entertainment yet. It was announced last month that Whitby would hold a winter festival with an ice rink and more.

4. Temple Newsham Magical Illuminated Trail

Temple Newsham near Leeds will be transformed into to a stunning trail of beautiful lights, guests will be able to get lost in tunnels made up completely of twinkling lights, as well as enjoy huge glittering bauble installations and beautiful lights glowing under the trees. It all kicks off on November 26th.

5. The Polar Express Train Ride at Wensleydale

You can re-create the magic of the 2004 film The Polar Express with your family & friends on the Wensleydale Railway journey. You will get to meet characters from the film, such as the conductor, the singing chefs, the hobo and of course the main man himself Father Christmas. Book tickets here.

6. Bedale Christmas Festival

Bedale will host a Christmas Festival – where visitors can attend an indoor Christmas shopping event on 27th indoor at the Hall and outdoor on the Marketplace., with a number of gift stalls to visit where the kids will hopefully be able to meet Santa before the big day.

7. Christmas at Harewood House, Leeds

Harewood House will be opening its doors again for the festive period, with Christmas shopping, seasonal food, and a number of festive experiences to enjoy during your visit – including the stunning house decoration. Tickets are on sale now.

8. Sewerby Hall and Gardens Winter Wonderland

Taking place from the start of December through to 23rd of December, you’ll have a fantastic time at the beautiful grounds at Sewerby, which is putting on a beautiful Winter Wonderland trail that will be fun for all ages. Find out more here.

9. Christmas In Narnia at Castle Howard

Stepping through the wardrobe, you’ll be greeted with a wonderful winter wonderland in the North Yorkshire stately home near York. The magical books of C.S Lewis will be brought to life in this incredible event, which has had an ice spell thrust upon it, which will see Castle Howard transformed into a Narnian wonderland. 10. York City Cruises Santa Experience

York City Cruises 2021 Santa Experience, will invite guests aboard and where they can sit at their own table, with each child being allocated time to visit Santa in his Grotto. Tickets include a glass of wine for the grown-ups, 50 minutes on-board the boat, soft drinks for the kids, colouring sheets, a present from Santa and even all the tools to write an official letter to the Big Man.

11. Leeds Christmas Market

Leeds city council said that the usual Christmas Market on Millenium Square will be cancelled, but they’re hoping to put something else in place to celebrate the Xmas period.: “In light of the evolving situation around the pandemic, we are currently working with our partners to determine the best ways to celebrate Leeds safely over the coming year. We will be sharing updates on the events schedule as soon as we can.”

12. Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland, York

The magical winter experience is welcoming back the North of England’s largest outdor ice rink with its 975 sq m of real ice and 30ft high sparkling Christmas tree as its centrepiece. There will be an illuminated tree, log cabins and more to make a magical setting makes for the perfect festive experience for all ages. 

13. Sleigh Rides at Piglets Adventure Farm

Tickets are now on sale for Piglets Adventure Farm’s Sleigh Rides, where the kids can head out on a magical sleigh ride to Santa’s Woodland Village – where they’ll be able to meet Santa in his grotto. Social distancing measures will be in place, with a number of changes for this year’s experience.

14. North Yorkshire Moors Railway Santa Specials

Santa’s Grotto with a difference – NYMR’s Santa Specials are confirmed to return for 2020 – with tickets going on sale September 14th. Each ticket includes a private compartment to sit in on the steam train, interaction with Santa’s Elves, a photo with Santa, a return journey from Pickering to Levisham and a present for each child.

15. Haworth Christmas Market

The beautiful village of Haworth is home to independent gift shops, tea rooms and pubs and every weekend over Christmas the cobbled streets are full of traders, choirs, carol singers and Father Christmas like a scene out of A Christmas Carol. Family and friends can enjoy the magical charm from 27th November – 19th December 2021.

16. Lotherton Hall Christmas Experience, Leeds

The Christmas Experience at Lotherton Hall is set to go ahead, last year’s dates 2343 scheduled for 27th November – January 3rd, but this year’s haven’t been anounced just yet. Santa and his Elves will be back to welcome guests – with a storytime experience with presents, a twinkling woodland walk and the ‘Wildlife World’ experience where guests can visit the penguins, see the flamingos and more.

17. Richmond Town Christmas Market

Richmond Christmas Market is back bigger than ever this year. People can expect more stalls  – more variety. They’ll have live entertainment and something for the whole family to enjoy. 

18. Beverley Festival Of Christmas

They’ve set up the website but haven’t released details on the festival as of yet. Check on any updates via the website here.

19. Lightwater Valley Festive Family Fun

Last year Lightwater Valley had a ‘Alice in Winderland’ experience, featuring the huge Alice in Wonderland themed lanterns including the famous characters from the story. Guests could walk through and check out the huge illuminations, as well as enjoy food and drink and fairground rides. They are having a Christmas event from 4th December, but haven’t announced details yet.+

20. Stockeld Park Christmas Adventure, Wetherby

Stockeld Park’s Christmas Adventure is back, including their fantastic Winter Illuminations, Santa’s Grotto and their fabulous Silver Band. The Enchanted Forest will be coming to life after dusk, and will run from 21st November right up until 3rd January. Visit the website here for more information.

21. Yorkshire Wildlife Park Winter Illuminations

Yorkshire Wildlife Park will welcome the unmissable Lightopia this year, where guests will be able to walk through Yorkshire’s biggest lantern display. There’ll be over 2,400 metres of illuminated trails to follow, with seriously impressive sculptures in the shapes of animals, mystical creatures and more. There’ll be tunnels of light, festive food and so much more. Get tickets now.

22. Meet Father Christmas, Bolton Abbey

Father Christmas is returning to Bolton Abbey this winter after having last year off. You canmeet Santa on the following days: November 27 and 28 | December 4 & 5 | December 11 & 12 | December 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23.

23. Mother Shipton’s Winter Woodland Walks

last year they adapted their Christmas offering to provide a fun, COVID-safe atmosphere for guests to enjoy, Mother Shipton’s have said they are doing something from the start of December which may be like their magical Winter Woodland Walks, but they are yet to reveal the details of the event.

24. RHS Harlow Carr Glow 2021

Harlow Carr has been fully decked out with stunning light sculptures this Christmas, and its the perfect illuminated walk for those looking for a festive stroll. Last year the event sold out fast so act quick if you want to go this year. Get tickets here.

25. North Bay Heritage Railway Santa Specials

North Bay Heritage Railway in Scarborough will be continuing with the festive celebrations this month, with COVID-safe rail rides featuring Santa himself. Hot drinks are included for all guests to warm up during your journey, with elves and the Big Man himself on hand to greet the kids at a social distance. Find out more.

26. Yorkshire Drive In-Cinema, Scarborough

A fantastic drive-in cinema has opened in Scarborough, screening a number of festive classics throughout December. Guests will be able to enjoy the festivities from the safety of their own cars, where you can pig out on all the treats and even turn up in your PJs if you wish! Tickets here.

27. Music & Lights Christmas at Fountains Abbey

The ruins will be aglow with coloured lights and you can listen to various musical acts of over the November and December period. Find out more here.

28. Country Living Magazine Christmas Fair

This Christmas festive fair is back in Harrogate for a once-a-year family friendly day out with gift stalls, food and drink places and more including great live music. The country Living magazine will bring every thing you love about their magazine from the 25th November to 28th November.

29. The Snowman Cinema Screening

The Snowman is returning to Yorkshire this Christmas with a live orchestra, following a year off in the region due to the pandemic. It will be touring a number of cities, one being York in the run up to Christmas. It’s described as a ‘heartwarming’ affair and isn’t one to be missed.

30. Robin Hood’s Bay Victorian Weekend

Annual Victorian themed weekend in beautiful Robin Hood’s Bay. 2021 will be our 27th Victorian Weekend from December 3rd – 5th. Family fun past and present.

31. Skipton Christmas Market

Taking place on Sunday 5th December and Sunday 12th December starting from 10pm each day. You can enjoy great food, drink and entertainment in the beautiful Market Town.

32. Bedale Christmas Market

The market will return after missing last year on the 27th November and will include many stalls, including food and drink, crafts, and traditional market stalls. There will also be entertainment in the form of carollers and the Bedale Brass Band with Christmas Lights switched on at 4pm.

33. Malton Christmas Market

The market is planned from Saturday 4th December to Sunday 5th December and you can look forward to some grat food and handmade gifts.

34. Knaresborough Christmas Market

It’s planned for Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th of December, but may change owing to change in the coronavirus precautions.

35. Scarborough Sparkle

Taking place at Scarborough Open Air Theatre, the Christmas wonderland on NOrth Bay will be a great festive event that will have you getting excited for Christmas 2021.

36. Treasurer’s House Christmas, York

The festive season is busy at the Treasurer’s House in York. This includes Christmas thorugh the ages, a fire pit to keep toastie at the festive tea-garden and enjoy treatss and live music and a chance to meet Father Christmas himself.
